US Military to Open Most Field Artillery Jobs to Women…but maybe not Rangers

SUMMARY: Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno has publicly stated that the Army will open to women all field artillery units, except the 13F military occupational specialty. The only unit to be subject to a waiver is a fire support specialist unit. Odierno goes on to say, “we want the best person, if they’re qualified and meet the standards, and we want to give them the opportunity to do whatever they want.” When asked about women and Ranger School, Odierno claims he does not “necessarily connect” opening Ranger School to opening the infantry and armor units, but goes on to cite the importance of providing women the “opportunity.” The Army has not made a decision regarding seeking an exception for infantry and armor units to the general policy that opens up all units to women. The incoming Chief of Staff General Mary Milley will likely make any upcoming decisions regarding Army units and women in combat.
